Understanding the options

If you're delving into the world of senior living, you probably have more questions than answers. The realm of senior care can be overwhelming, with a wide range of options to choose from.

Should you stay at home and get help? Perhaps you should move into a retirement community. Or a nursing home?

Home Care

One of the first options you may consider is home care. While staying in the comfort of your own home is definitely a great advantage, it often lacks the social aspects found in senior living communities. Staying socially connected and stimulated is crucial to your mental health and quality of life; senior living provides an environment that fosters both.

When someone mentions senior living, you might envision the traditional nursing homes of yesteryear. However, modern senior living is anything but one-size-fits-all. Today, it encompasses various types of care, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing.

But how do you figure out which one will be the best senior living option for you? Before you kickstart your senior living exploration, it's helpful to understand the types of care available.

1. Independent Living:

Independent living is like maintaining your own home, but with a twist. It offers a community setting where you can live independently, without the hassles of home maintenance and chores. Chef-prepared meals, social events, and relief from housekeeping responsibilities give you the freedom to enjoy life in your space, stress-free.

2. Assisted Living:

Assisted living is about getting a little extra support while still relishing privacy, within a vibrant social community. Our residents benefit from professional wellness care and dignified assistance with daily activities like dressing, bathing, and medication management, all while living in their own apartments.

3. Memory Care:

For those struggling with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, memory care offers a specialized haven that promotes comfort and dignity. Without providing high level medical services, memory care communities support cognitive and emotional needs, while sensitively preserving privacy and independence.

4. Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Facilities:

When intensive medical care is needed, skilled nursing offers continuous professional care and support. Whether for short-term rehabilitation or an extended period, patients get the high-level medical care they need to recover from surgery, accident or illness. Once recuperated, they can transition back to more independent living.

At Spring Oak communities, we offer a variety of services including Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care. We also offer short-term stays, if you’d like to try out the community without making a long-term commitment, or if you need temporary care while loved ones are away. Specific services vary according to location.

We do not offer skilled nursing care at any Spring Oak location. You’ll be glad to know, however, that research shows that older adults living in retirement communities and assisted living neighborhoods such as ours, are less likely to need to be admitted into long-term skilled nursing care.
