Understanding Eligibility

Here's a quick guide to understanding eligibility for the Aid and Attendance pension:

Image

Military Service:

To qualify, veterans must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a wartime period. (Wartime periods include World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War.)

Image

Medical Condition:

Veterans or their surviving spouses must require help with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating, or mobility. A medical professional's evaluation may be needed to establish eligibility.

Financial Criteria:

There are financial thresholds to meet, but these can vary. The VA considers income, assets, and medical expenses when determining eligibility.

Age:

There is no specific age requirement, but the need for assistance due to a medical condition is a key factor.

Applying for Veteran Benefits

We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you apply for Veteran Aid and Attendance benefits. You can also get in touch with the organizations listed below who specialize in helping veterans like you claim the funds they deserve.

1.

Gather your military discharge papers (DD214) and records showing active duty during a wartime period.

2.

Schedule a medical evaluation to determine the need for assistance with daily living activities. Obtain a detailed report outlining your medical condition and the required level of care.

3.

Compile documentation of your financial status, including income, assets, and medical expenses.

4.

Complete the application form - VA Form 21-527EZ for the Improved Pension with Aid and Attendance. Mail your completed application and supporting documents to the appropriate regional VA office.

5.

The VA will review your application and notify you of their decision. This process may take several months, so patience is key.
